All around the world, Muslim women are recognized by their hijab and clothing. They are known for their respectable appearance. They represent their humility and modesty by the way they dress. ABAYASAbayas are simple and loose overgarments worn by Muslim women. The abaya covers the whole body except for the head, hands, and feet. Abayas preserve a woman's modesty and humility in a materialistic world. Currently, many abayas are purchased through websites such as Abaya Addict, a website founded by Dr. Deanna Khalil featuring unique designs, Annah Hariri, founded by a convert seeking to create chic modest fashion, East Essence, founded with the idea of serving the community, Modanisa, founded to provide the latest hijab fashion with great prices, and so on. These websites create an easily accessible way to buy halal clothes for everyone across the globe. DETAILSAbayas come in a wide range of colors, patterns, and styles, depending on the region they originate from. Traditional abayas are plain and unadorned, but recently it has become common to embellish them with colors and decorate the sleeves, cuffs, and necklines with sequins, lace, and beads. DAILY OUTFITSThough wearing abayas and skirts sounds ideal, it's difficult to wear them everyday. Therefore, the "Modesty Movement" came with plenty of advantages for the Muslim community. The new movement resulted in department stores across the world imputing new lines of modest and loose clothing. Macy's, an American department store chain founded in 1858, started carrying its first modest fashion line called "Verona Collection." Not only does it provide tops, dresses, cardigans, and pants, but also hijabs for the "community of women looking for a solution to their fashion needs," claims Cassandra Jones, senior vice president of Macy's fashion. Because of stores all around exchanging their once-tight clothing for modest clothing, it has become effortless to put together many halal daily outfits.

"Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and be modest. That is purer for them. Lo! God is Aware of what they do. And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and be modest, and to display of their adornment only that which is apparent, and to draw their veils over their chests, and not to reveal their adornment." (Quran 24:30)
In Islam, it is mandatory for both men and women to dress modestly. When God revealed this verse, men and women immediately obeyed and respected God's command and have been ever since. In today's society, Islamic modesty is viewed differently. Muslim women who wear the hijab are frequently stigmatized. Muslim men who wear the kufi hat and have long beards are identified as terrorists. However, in spite of the negativity, awareness to Islamic guidelines has come about through the inclusion of Muslims in the media. Now is the time and age for Muslim influencers. Influencers such as Huda Kattan, the founder of the cosmetics line Huda Beauty, Halima Aden, the world's first hijab-wearing model, Dina Torkia, stylist, designer, author, Youtuber and fashion blogger, and so many more are accepted and succeeding in today's world. A "Modesty Movement" is sweeping the world, and it is becoming easier for Muslims to abide Islamic guidelines on clothing. -Sana Alshaar Modesty and humility are frequently used interchangeably. The difference between the two is modesty means restraint in behavior and appearance; humility means the internal feeling of being free from pride. Modesty is physical and external, while humility is an internal state of mind. Though modesty is physical, by being modest, one could become humble.
Modesty is a key virtue of Islam. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Faith (Belief) consists of more than sixty branches (i.e. parts). And Haya (This term “Haya” covers a large number of concepts which are to be taken together; amongst them are self respect, modesty, bashfulness, and scruple, etc.) is a part of faith." (Sahih Al-Bukhari) Humility should be everyone's ultimate goal. Modesty is the first step to achieving humility. Muslim men and women can dress modestly by covering up most of their bodies and wearing loose clothing. They should not flaunt name branded clothing or accessories. Nowadays, it is the norm to wear and parade expensive clothing. To avoid this, Muslims should remember the way they dress is only for God. By dressing modestly, Muslims are declaring their devotion to God. Plus, they can remember being modest leads to humility, the ultimate goal. -Sana Alshaar February 1st marks a day in which Muslim women are recognized for wearing the hijab and for the struggle that comes with wearing it. For the purpose of this day, the social media team reached out to hijabis in search of a powerful story. Tara Alzubadi volunteered and spoke about an encounter she had when she was questioned about her hijab. Tara was eleven years old when she first put on hijab. Today, she is thankful and confident for her hijab and for the journey it has taken her on. -Sana Alshaar |
