Who would’ve thought that cleaning would become a trend in THIS day and age? Well, Japanese organizing consultant and author, Marie Kondo, has recently become famous for sparking this fad across the media. Not only has she published four best-selling books on organizing, but she also has her own Netflix show! Kondo has had the cleaning fever in her ever since she was a young girl, and recalls a voice telling her that she must look at her things more closely before she throws them away. Ever since then, Kondo decided to channel her passion into an act that would be for a good cause. In the KonMari method, she takes us through her process of organizing. She begins by gathering all her items, and carefully considers the value of each article, keeping only the things that “spark joy,” tokimeku phrased in Japanese. She emphasizes that the rest of the items should not just be thrown away, but categorized by which ones are still in good condition and can bring the same benefit to those in need as they did to the original owner. The Marie Kondo effect is quite evident as we see a rise in donations at GoodWill stores and thrift shops. -Faatima Qaudeer

What better way to practice humility than practicing upon the hadith that states, “Love for your brother what you love for yourself?" UAF has also hopped on the “Tidying Up” bandwagon with its annual Winter Clothing Drive. For four weeks, all 700 of our students were encouraged to search their houses for any articles of clothing or blankets that would be of beneficial use to the less fortunate. Organizing and donating isn’t just something that is a part of Marie Kondo’s Shinto religion, but are actions that are rewarded in Islam, when paired with the right and sincere intentions. When we donate something, even if it may be one of our favorite blankets, we do it for the sake of aiding others, humbling ourselves in the process. We know that actions like donating and selflessness are pleasing to Allah(swt), and that He’ll only bless us with only better things.
